The Mughal emperor Aurangzeb sent a massive army under the command of Rajput general Ram Singh I to conquer Assam. The Mughal forces were formidable — 30,000 infantry, 15,000 archers, and 1,000 cannons.
Understanding that the Mughal cavalry was their greatest strength, Lachit Borphukan cleverly shifted the battlefield to the Brahmaputra River. Using brilliant riverine strategy and guerrilla warfare tactics, he neutralized their advantages.
Despite being seriously ill during the final phase of the battle, Lachit personally led his troops into combat. His determination turned the tide, and the Mughal army was decisively defeated.
The victory at Saraighat stands as one of the greatest military achievements in Indian history.
